Defending government and employees in Ryan Ferguson’s civil rights lawsuit has cost the city of Columbia and Boone County a combined total of about $294,000. The civil rights lawsuit filed on behalf of Ferguson, who was convicted of a 2001 murder and served eight years of a 40-year sentence before the conviction was vacated, claims that prosecutors and investigators failed to investigate other potential suspects or disclose evidence properly.

The city has paid for its own legal representation and is paying to defend the remaining six defendants, the city’s risk manager said. The county paid to defend itself and the three county-affiliated defendants.
