Google Fiber extends completion estimate, competition catching up

Google Inc. is telling prospective customers that it may not finish connecting all of Kansas City with one-gigabit internet service until next summer rather than by the end of this year.

Once Google Fiber finally blankets the market, few places in the world will have broadband so speedy for home users at such a low cost. Yet Kansas City’s great bandwidth edge looks slightly less impressive as Internet service elsewhere continues to move at ever increasing speeds.

Google has wired thousands of homes since 2011, when it picked Kansas City for a service that was more than 100 times the national average for homes.
