Boulevard Brewing Co. will celebrate its 25th anniversary next month, but events in 2015 may be bigger cause for celebration for the Kansas City-based craft brewery.

One year removed from the announcement of its acquisition by Belgian brewer Duvel Moortgat, Boulevard is expanding faster than anticipated. The brewery, which ranks No. 12 among U.S. craft breweries, plans to add three more U.S. markets by late March, and it wants to expand internationally, potentially to France, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

Boulevard founder John McDonald said the company’s premium Smokestack series presents the best opportunity for growth and that its Tank 7 ale is “on fire,” driving almost half of all Smokestack series sales.

The brewery’s $12-million-plus expansion of one of its beer fermenting cellars is scheduled to be completed by mid-2015, with capacity eventually increasing by more than 36 percent. Other capital improvements will include a $1.7 million wastewater treatment plant and a new $1.3 million filtration plant.
