Fate of charitable foundations uncertain in Carondelet hospital sale

Donors to two Kansas City-area hospitals — St. Joseph Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center — want to know what will happen to the $20 million that has been donated to the hospitals’ charity foundations when Carondelet Health sells the hospitals to Prime Healthcare Services, Inc.

Ascension Health, the St. Louis-based health care system that owns Carondelet, did not include the charities in its sale to Prime Healthcare, but Ascension has  not yet disclosed what they plan to do with these charities’ assets. The philanthropists who donated the $20 million hope that the money will stay in Kansas City.

Board members for the hospitals’ foundations have expressed concern over the uncertainty surrounding the assets. As of June 2013, the foundation serving St. Joseph listed assets of $19.1 million. The foundation for St. Mary’s listed assets of $1.1 million.
