Multistate businesses face challenge with insurance marketplace

Businesses that have employees in multiple states could face additional challenges securing health insurance through the online Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP.

The marketplace is set to open Nov. 15, and companies with fewer than 50 full-time employees will be able to select SHOP plans through HealthCare.gov. But plans will be organized by state, posing an additional challenge to firms whose employees are based in multiple states.

It’s not a new problem, as companies have dealt with insuring multistate businesses for years. But it could present an obstacle for firms looking to purchase insurance — and potentially secure a tax credit for up to 50 percent of the cost of the insurance.
