Associated Wholesale Grocers to buy Iowa grocery chain

Kansas City-based Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc. will acquire Dahl’s Foods Inc., an Iowa-based grocery chain that earlier this year closed three of its 13 stores and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

On Sunday, AWG agreed to purchase Dahl’s Foods’ assets, which are worth about $44.7 million. Dahl’s has about $41.12 million in total liabilities and recorded $158.6 million in gross sales in the recently completed fiscal year.

AWG is a retail-owned cooperative that serves more than 2,300 U.S. retail member stores.
