Group revives push for historic designation in fight over Kemper Arena

Historic Kansas City plans to complete the process of getting Kemper Arena on the National Register of Historic Places after a developer was threatened with legal action for its pursuit of the same goal.

Dan Cofran, a board member of the nonprofit Historic Kansas City, made that announcement at a meeting scheduled for discussion of the American Royal Association’s $60 million plan to raze Kemper and replace it with a smaller events center.

But the American Royal’s plan, which calls for a $20 million capital contribution and $1 million in operating subsidies to the American Royal for 25 years from Kansas City, encountered strong opposition during the meeting.
