Health insurance enrollment enjoys smoother start

HealthCare.gov saw a smoother start to open enrollment Saturday than it did a year ago, when the federal health insurance portal was beset by technical problems. The Department of Health and Human Services said 23,000 people filled out applications during the first eight hours of enrollment Saturday.

Some 152,000 Missourians enrolled in coverage for this year, and a variety of events held in the state over the weekend aimed to help people enroll for coverage for 2015.

The start of enrollment came against a backdrop of uncertainty for President Barack Obama’s health care plan. Republicans, who have control of both the House and Senate after big wins in midterm elections, have vowed to unravel the law, and the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a legal challenge that could block government subsidies used by consumers in more than 30 states to purchase health coverage.
