Veterans organizations voice support for Medicaid expansion

Despite continued resistance from Republican leadership in the Missouri General Assembly, lobbyist and former U.S. Sen. Christopher “Kit” Bond has teamed up with state Sen. Ryan Silvey, R-Kansas City, to push for Medicaid expansion in the state. The pair announced Tuesday that the state’s military veterans organizations support expanding and reforming the health care program for the poor.

Missouri’s uninsured population includes more than 50,000 veterans and their family members, according to the statement released by Bond’s lobbying firm. About half of that group could be eligible for Medicaid if it were expanded.

The U.S. Supreme Court left states to determine whether to expand Medicaid, a measure called for under the Affordable Care Act. Missouri is one of 22 states that has resisted expansion.
