Holiday rush offers stark contrast to shuttered shopping malls

Surviving shopping malls around the Kansas City area still draw sizable crowds this time of year. The holiday hustle and bustle at Oak Park Mall, Independence Center and Ward Parkway Shopping Center stands in stark contrast to the activity — or lack thereof — at other malls around the metro area.

Other malls, including Indian Springs, Bannister and Mission Mall, are now shuttered or demolished, a testament to a period of overbuilding and the continued fallout from the rise of Internet retailers.
