An overhaul of Ford Motor Co.’s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo was scheduled to begin Wednesday, preparing the plant for production of Ford’s new aluminum F-150 pickup and leaving employees who work on the truck on temporary layoff until Jan. 26.

About 500 contractors are working to retool the plant. A similar project at Ford’s truck plant in Dearborn, Mich., cost $359 million.

The newly designed F-150 is about 700 pounds lighter than its predecessor, allowing Ford to meet or exceed fuel efficiency standards through 2024.
