Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Mary Nelson, a Democrat from St. Louis, to serve on the University of Missouri System’s Board of Curators, the governing body that oversees operation of the system’s four campuses across the state.

Nelson’s six-year term starts Jan. 1, pending approval by the Missouri Senate. She will represent the First Congressional District, replacing Wayne Goode.

Nelson graduated from the MU School of Law and currently serves as the general counsel and chief legal officer for the St. Louis Community College District.

The UM system spans four campuses — in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla and St. Louis — and had a total enrollment of 75,272 in fall 2013.
