Hit hard by the recession, endowments at colleges and universities have bounced back in a big way. The Council for Aid to Education reports that U.S. colleges and universities raised about $34 billion in 2013, an increase of more than $3 billion over 2012, and the most ever raised in a single year.

The University of Missouri system, which manages the endowment for its Columbia, St. Louis and Rolla campuses, and a portion of University of Missouri-Kansas City’s endowment, had a total endowment pool of $1.3 billion on June 30.

At UMKC, which didn’t form its own foundation until 2009, the endowment reached $35 million, up $8.3 million from the year before. The UM system also holds $140 million in endowment funds for the school.
