Missouri Republicans continue to oppose ACA and Medicaid expansion

As Missouri lawmakers prepared to convene today for the new legislative session, some Republicans made it clear they will continue to oppose to the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion.

Incoming state senator Dr. Bob Onder, R-Lake St. Louis, said fighting the effects of Obama’s health care law and preventing Medicaid expansion are his top priorities for 2015. Onder, a physician, recently introduced a bill that would revoke a health insurance company’s license for selling plans in Missouri if it accepts federal subsidies for policies sold through Missouri’s federally run health exchange.

As legislators in both the House and Senate affirmed any debate on Medicaid expansion is “off the table” during the upcoming legislative session, efforts to expand medical coverage remain forlorn. The Republican-controlled General Assembly defeated all previous attempts to expand medical care for some 300,000 low-income Missourians.

Opponents of expansion say they are worried about the long-term costs both to the federal and state governments. Proponents are concerned with the shrinking federal funding for hospitals providing care for the uninsured.
