St. Louis health care systems respond to proposed federal payment changes

Days after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced changes to how doctors and health systems will be paid, St. Louis-area health care systems SSM Health and Ascension have joined a task force to prepare for the shift.

HHS said Monday it wants 90 percent of Medicare payments to be tied to outcomes — so, quality of care rather than quantity — by 2018. In response, SSM and Ascension are joining the Health Care Transformation Task force, a national group pledging to move 75 percent of business into deals with insurers who will pay for quality of care.
