Volunteers across the state knocked on neighbors’ doors over the weekend to raise awareness about Medicaid expansion and encourage residents to engage their local lawmakers on the issue.
The Missouri Medicaid Coalition organized groups to canvass neighborhoods in support of expanding Medicaid to some 300,000 Missourians that don’t make enough to pay for health care subsidies but don’t qualify for Medicaid under current standards.
More than two dozen states have expanded Medicaid following the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has repeatedly encouraged Missouri to do the same. But the state’s Republican-controlled legislature has resisted expansion and deemed the issue a nonstarter for the 2015 legislative session.
