Coalition urges scrutiny of Post-MOM Brands merger

In a letter alleging a lack of competition in the cereal industry, 22 organizations this week urged the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general in all 50 states to investigate the proposed merger of Post Holdings Inc. and MOM Brands.

The letter says there is already a lack of competition in the cereal market and that, with the merger, four firms would sell close to 90 percent of all cereal.

This follows a January announcement by St. Louis-based Post Holdings that it would acquire Minnesota-based MOM Brands for $1.15 billion. Post said the deal would solidify its position as the third-largest cereal brand in the market.
