Medical marijuana effort gains momentum in Missouri

Efforts to legalize marijuana for medicinal use in Missouri have gained traction this year, with a Republican sponsoring a bill to legalize medical marijuana in the state for the first time.

Rep. Dave Hinson, R-St. Clair, drafted the bill, which supporters have called the most restrictive medical marijuana law in the country. That comes as a recent poll by the Remington Research Group found about 67 percent of likely voters would support a medical marijuana law in Missouri.

Montel Williams, the radio and television personality and a multiple sclerosis sufferer, appears to have played a role in the legislation gaining steam this year. Williams has been an advocate for medical marijuana for years, and he announced plans to make a full-length documentary about the efforts around medical marijuana in Missouri.
