Senate committee approves limits for stadium bonds

No bonds can be issued or extended to pay for an NFL stadium in St. Louis without approval from the Missouri Legislature or voters, according to a measure approved Wednesday by a Missouri Senate committee.

However, Gov. Jay Nixon’s administration has claimed that Nixon has the authority to extend payments on the existing Edward Jones Dome bonds for the new stadium being planned for the riverfront.

“I don’t believe that one person should be able to put the state $200 million in debt,” Sen. Ryan Silvey, R-Kansas City, told the Associated Press.
