Extra insurance enrollment offers chance to avoid penalty

Last weekend marked the start of a six-week window for Missouri residents to avoid a tax penalty by signing up for health insurance.

The additional opportunity for enrollment, which runs through the end of April, is only open to consumers who say they weren’t aware of the Affordable Care Act’s mandate to buy health insurance.

This tax season marks the first time that Americans will have to pay for not adhering to the federal health care law. Congressional estimates suggest about 4 million Americans will owe some penalty, with many more uninsured Americans exempted from penalties because of low income or other issues.

People who didn’t have insurance last year could owe a minimum of $95.
