KC hospital foundation board fights Ascension for control of $20M

Ascension Health has terminated board members who oversaw the $20 million St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation, leaving them without a say in how the foundation’s funds will be disbursed.

St. Louis-based Ascension, through its subsidiary Carondelet Health, retained the foundation’s assets after selling St. Joseph, a Kansas City hospital, and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs to Prime Healthcare.

The boards of the two Kansas City hospitals have been vying for local control of the funds, which were donated to the hospitals over the years.

Former St. Joseph foundation chairman Charles Jensen says the old board has “been kicked out” and wants the state attorney general’s office to look into the matter.
