LaunchCode, an organization that places aspiring computer programmers in apprenticeships and jobs with established companies, plans to expand to Kansas City.

The program, created by St. Louis entrepreneur and Square co-founder Jim McKelvey, is headquartered in St. Louis and also has an office in Miami. Kansas City Mayor Sly James announced plans to bring the organization to Kansas City during his annual State of the City address Tuesday.

A LaunchCode spokeswoman said the organization was working with James’ office and potential funding sources to secure the capital needed to set up shop in Kansas City.

The organization currently has 300 partner companies and has placed more than 140 coders in jobs in St. Louis since its creation in 2013.
