Uber, the San Francisco-based ride-sharing company, has launched its UberX service in St. Louis’ Illinois suburbs.
UberX, which allows nonprofessional drivers to use their own cars to give rides to people with the Uber app, is not available in St. Louis.
Sagar Shah, associate general manager for Uber, said that although UberX is still outlawed in St.Louis, riders using the service can take rides to and from the suburbs in Illinois, and can also take them from those towns to St. Louis.
Ron Klein, executive director of St. Louis’ Metropolitan Taxicab Commission, said differences between Uber and the MTC regarding insurance and background checks for UberX drivers still have to be ironed out before UberX can operate in St. Louis. Uber’s premium sedan service, Uber Black, is operational in St. Louis.
