Struggling steelmakers seek changes in fight over imports

Struggling American steelmakers want to change the rules in their fight against less expensive foreign imports.

The industry wants Congress to reconsider how trade cases are reviewed, focusing on lost jobs and production instead of focusing on profit levels, as regulators have traditionally done.

U.S. Steel, the nation’s second-largest producer of steel, has warned 6,000 workers of impending layoffs, including 2,080 in Granite City, Ill. Domestic producers say the American steel industry can’t survive if changes aren’t made.
