Alton Steel Inc. has laid off 62 workers, or about a quarter of the St. Louis-area steelmaker’s workforce. The move marks the second announced staffing reduction by an area steelmaker in the last few weeks, following U.S. Steel’s announcement that it would idle its plant in Granite City, Ill., which employs 2,080 people.

Both companies said the moves were temporary and that workers would be hired back when the market improves.

Alton Steel CEO Jim Hrusovsky said the layoffs were driven, in part, by decreased demand for the company’s steel bar products. Like U.S. Steel, Alton has seen its business suffer because there’s been less investment in oil and gas drilling equipment due to low crude prices, Hruovsky said.
