Recycling spotty, but showing growth, in St. Louis area

As the U.S. marks the 45th Earth Day today, there are big disparities in recycling rates between different parts of the St. Louis region, and the area as a whole lags behind other parts of the country in the prevalence of recycling services.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated a national recycling of 34 percent in 2012, which is well ahead of rates in many parts of the St. Louis area.

Still, the region has seen progress: Universal recycling wasn’t available in many parts of the St. Louis area as recently as the 2000s, but local governments have made increased access to curbside recycling a priority since then.
