Ameren Missouri is instituting a $108 million rate hike that applies to all its customers but the largest, southeastern Missouri aluminum smelter Noranda. The move shifts about $21 million of Noranda’s costs to other customers.

The Missouri Public Service Commission on Wednesday approved a rate increase by Ameren that includes an exception for Noranda, actually cutting prices for the struggling New Madrid aluminum plant.

For residential customers, Ameren estimates the rate increase will amount to about 5 percent, or $5.50 to $6 on the average monthly bill. The Noranda exception is expected to add just less than $1 per month to those bills.

Ameren has won six general rate increases since 2007, raising electricity prices by about 50 percent in that time.
