Syngenta rejects Monsanto’s $45 billion acquisition offer

Syngenta AG has rebuffed Monsanto Co.’s $45 billion takeover bid, saying the deal undervalued the company and posed significant risks. Syngenta, a Swiss company that is the world’s largest maker of agrochemicals, said it was open to further talks with Monsanto, which is based in Creve Coeur and is the world’s largest seed company.

A deal between Monsanto and Syngenta would be the largest acquisition of a European firm by an American company in history.

Monsanto also expressed interest in acquiring Syngenta last year, but takeover talks fizzled.
