Kansas City officials gathered Wednesday to celebrate the “topping out” of downtown’s first high-rise building constructed in nearly a decade — and the first new residential tower added to the skyline since 1976.

The $80 million One Light apartment, a 315-unit Cordish Companies complex, is expected to begin accepting tenants this fall. Meanwhile, preparations continue for Two Light, the $105 million tower that Baltimore-based Cordish announced earlier this year.

One Light is perhaps the most prominent symbol of the resurgence of the downtown Kansas City apartment market. Downtown development officials on hand Wednesday said the structure is a sign of things to come for the area, which they said currently has about 21,000 residents but could grow to 40,000 people.
