Monsanto says headquarters change wouldn’t affect St. Louis operations

Though Monsanto Co. has proposed moving its legal headquarters overseas as part of a desired merger with a Swiss rival, the Creve Coeur-based seed company says such a move would not affect its operations in the St. Louis area.

After Syngenta, a Swiss agricultural chemical maker, rebuffed a second $45 billion takeover bid by Monsanto earlier this week, Monsanto revealed some of the specifics of its latest offer to Syngenta — including a name change and relocation of its legal headquarters.

Scott Partridge, Monsanto’s vice president for strategy, subsequently likened the move to companies making their headquarters in Delaware for tax purposes. The company’s executives and 4,000 employees in the St. Louis area would not be affected, Partridge said.
