Health care providers brace for Supreme Court insurance subsidy ruling

Health care providers are preparing for the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down subsidies that help some 6.4 million Americans buy health insurance. For St. Louis-based Ascension Health, that means lobbying lawmakers at the state and national levels to back the subsidies.

The high court is expected to reach a decision this month on whether the subsidies, which help people buy health insurance under President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, should be allowed in states that did not establish their own health insurance exchanges under the law.

Ascension and other health care providers are bracing for the possibility that the subsidies would be discontinued.
