St. Louis cab companies bristle at anti-tech label

As the taxi industry has resisted entry by ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft into the St. Louis market, some have portrayed local cab companies as slow to adopt the latest technology. Not so, the cab companies say.

Several local companies — including Laclede, St. Louis County Cab and Yellow Cab as well as ABC and Checker Cab — use apps with functionality similar to Uber’s, allowing users to summon rides, get fare estimates, track car locations and more.

Supporters of the upstart ride-sharing services have been critical of St. Louis for its refusal to allow UberX operate in town, making it the largest city in the country not to have the service.

However, the St. Louis Metropolitan Taxicab Commission is mulling a proposal that would allow UberX to operate in the city.
