AMC to acquire Starplex Cinemas for $172 million

AMC Theatres plans to buy Starplex Cinemas for $172 million in cash, the Leawood, Kan.-based cinema operator announced Tuesday. AMC, the nation’s second-largest theater chain, adds 33 theaters with 346 screens in 12 states with the purchase.

AMC said the acquisition of Starplex, a privately held company based in Dallas, allows it to expand into small and midsize markets where there is “little geographic overlap” with AMC’s current properties.

The purchase of Starplex, which has theaters in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia and Washington, is expected to be completed by year’s end.
