BJC HealthCare hampered by 20-hour computer outage

BJC HealthCare, the largest hospital provider in the St. Louis area, was struck by a computer outage that stretched about 20 hours and temporarily disrupted operations systemwide.

All 13 hospitals in the BJC system were without a host of software, including email, electronic medical records, registration and scheduling systems, from 3 p.m. Tuesday until about 11 a.m. Wednesday.

BJC has not identified the cause of the problem, and officials refused to speculate about whether a hack was to blame. Patient and employee data were not compromised during the outage, a BJC representative said.
