St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare won regulatory approval Tuesday for a partnership with Memorial Group, which operates Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Ill., and its sister campus in Shiloh, Ill. That represents the second big move by BJC to expand its footprint in the region this year, following its earlier acquisition of a hospital in Farmington.
BJC and Memorial will create a nonprofit, Memorial Regional Health Services Inc., to serve as the parent for both Memorial hospitals. Both organizations will have equal representation on the Memorial Regional board.
Officials with St. Elizabeth’s hospital in Belleville expressed disappointment over the lack of details provided regarding the new partnership. They also suggested the deal may limit access to health care in the Illinois portion of the St. Louis metro area.
