Sen. Claire McCaskill slammed the movement against genetically modified organisms Tuesday in an appearance at Columbia’s Bay Farm Research Center. The Missouri Democrat assured University of Missouri researchers she wouldn’t tolerate any bias by the National Science Foundation against agricultural research.
Missouri’s senior senator encouraged the agricultural genetics researchers present at the meeting to toughen up and ignore criticism of GMOs, characterizing their opponents as “a small group of people making a lot of noise.”
“It’s ironic to me that the same group that’s pounding the table about climate change wants to ignore the science with GMOs,” McCaskill said. “If you believe in science, you believe in science. You can’t just pick and choose depending on the issue.”
