UM System to hire new government relations director

The University of Missouri system will hire a new executive director of state government relations in charge of coordinating the four-campus system’s operations as they relate to the state government.

The move comes as the system’s relationship with Missouri lawmakers has grown increasingly tense, with a Senate committee investigating the University of Missouri’s relationship with a physician who performs abortions at the Planned Parenthood facility in Columbia.

MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin testified before the committee regarding the school’s decision to grant “refer and follow” privileges to a Planned Parenthood physician, allowing her to refer patients to doctors at MU Health and receive updates about their treatment.

State lawmakers argued that the university failed to be transparent with its decisions on the matter.
