Twitter Inc. named Jack Dorsey its permanent CEO on Monday, ending months of speculation about who would become the next chief executive of the company. Dorsey, a St. Louis native who is also the CEO of mobile payments company Square, has been serving as interim CEO of the microblogging service since July.
Dorsey, who co-founded San Francisco-based Twitter, previously served as the company’s CEO for just over a year, from May 2007 to October 2008.
He will maintain a seat on Twitter’s board, but will relinquish his role as board chairman, according to an SEC filing.
Twitter is aiming to catalyze growth after its latest quarterly results showed the slowest rise in monthly average users since the company went public in 2013. Dorsey called that “unacceptable.”
