Operators of 17 Houlihan’s Restaurants on the East Coast face federal charges of skimming employees’ pay and tips to cover restaurant expenses.

The lawsuit, filed Sept. 28 in U.S. District Court in New Jersey, was filed against restaurants in New York and New Jersey that operate as separate businesses under the Houlihan’s brand. The suit does not name Kansas City-based Houlihan’s Inc.

The U.S. Department of Labor said it may recover millions in back wages, tips and damages for more than 1,400 workers affected by the restaurants’ alleged skimming.
