Housing, retail projects assemble around St. Louis Ikea

Ikea’s first St. Louis store has drawn the expected swarm of customers since it opened on Sept. 30, but the Swedish retailer is hardly the only new development in the neighborhood. Several other commercial and residential projects have opened recently or are in the works in the shadow of the massive blue and yellow furniture store.

Developers say street and sidewalk improvements in the area made for Ikea will have a positive effect on the whole neighborhood and should increase foot traffic to other businesses.

Plus, St. Louis University, the growth of the Cortex district and the expansion of Washington University School of Medicine and BJC HealthCare are driving up the demand for new housing in the neighborhood.
