Barbecue legend Rich Davis died Tuesday night at his Leawood, Kan. home. He was 89 years old.
Davis founded Masterpiece Products Inc. in 1978 in an effort to produce barbecue sauces he created. Davis sold the company eight years later to Kingsford Products Co.
Davis’ KC Masterpiece barbecue sauce is the top-selling barbecue sauce in the United States and is considered a prototypical Kansas City-style barbecue sauce. KC Masterpiece won the “Best Sauce on the Planet” award in 1980.
Davis won the first American Royal Barbecue competition and is in the American Royal Barbecue Hall of Fame. There will be a ceremony for Davis on Nov. 21 at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood. The ceremony is open to the public.
