Ceva Animal Health wins $6 million contract for avian flu vaccine

Ceva Animal Health, an animal health company that has its North American headquarters in Lenexa, Kan., landed a $6 million contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to manufacture 100 million doses of Vectormune AI — an avian flu vaccine.

Although the vaccine hasn’t been approved to treat avian flu, it’s stockpiled in case of an outbreak. The World Organization for Animal Health reports 309 individual outbreaks of avian flu in 2015, which is more than doubles the 2014 number.

The Lenexa, Kan.-based animal vaccine company will be ready to distribute the 100 million doses at the end of November. If the agency moves forward with a vaccination program, vaccines can be delivered anywhere in the U.S. within 10 days.
