A Kansas City Council committee on Monday agreed with the city’s attorney that a petition initiative challenging the proposed downtown convention hotel is legally flawed and should not appear on the November ballot.
The committee voted unanimously to recommend against adopting the petitions for an election. The full City Council is expected to vote on the issue on Nov. 12.
Backers of the hotel project say the petition has already delayed progress on the 800-room Hyatt that the previous City Council approved in July. Some had hoped the deal could close late this year or early next year, but uncertainty due to the petitions has led to delays in securing financing for the structure.
