Fifth Third Bank has notified customers that five St. Louis branches will close in January.

The move comes less than a month after Springfield-based Great Southern Bank acquired the St. Louis retail operations of Cincinnati-based Fifth Third. Great Southern bought 12 branches in the deal, increasing its footprint in the St. Louis area to 20 banks.

A Fifth Third representative declined to say how many employees are affected by the branches closing.
