Ascension expands with purchase of Wisconsin health system

Ascension announced Thursday that it will acquire all of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s operations in southeast Wisconsin. St. Louis-based Ascension, which is the nation’s largest nonprofit and Catholic health care system, will grow to 137 hospitals across the country, including 27 in Wisconsin, with the deal.

The purchase includes eight Wisconsin hospitals, a medical group and a network of other health care operations from the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, a Catholic nonprofit health system, operates in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. It reported revenue of $1.81 billion for the fiscal year completed June 30 and $1.75 billion for fiscal 2014.
