Royals’ World Series run drives proliferation of pop-up shops

The Kansas City Royals postseason success has been a home run for operators of pop-up shops around Kansas City.

Geoff Porter, a stand manager for Event Merchandising Inc., set up a shop in the lobby of Kansas City’s downtown Marriott hotel this week. He had a tourist from Mexico spend $2,000 on various pins, shirts, hats and other team merchandise that the tourist planned to bring to friends and family back home.

Rich Davis, a T-shirt salesman with N&D Sports out of Connecticut, set up a downtown pop-up shop of his own.

“We’ll be here through the World Series and then disappear into the night,” Davis said.
