ConAgra offloads private label unit for $2.7 billion

Just two years after acquiring St. Louis-based Ralcorp for $5.1 billion, ConAgra Foods Inc. will sell its private brands unit to food company TreeHouse Foods Inc. for $2.7 billion.

TreeHouse, which is based in Oak Brook, Ill., will become the country’s largest private-label food maker with the deal.

ConAgra, which is currently based in Omaha, Neb., said in June that it planned to exit the struggling private-label business, which has seen declining sales over the last two years. St. Louis-based Post Holdings was thought to be among the companies that might acquire Ralcorp.
