Abengoa shuttering U.S. headquarters in Chesterfield

The financial woes of Spanish renewable energy and biofuel company Abengoa SA are rippling into the St. Louis area, where the company’s U.S. bioenergy operations are based.

Abengoa Bioenergy, the U.S. biofuels unit of the Spanish company, plans to shut down its Chesterfield office that houses its U.S. headquarters, according to a report by Andalucia Informacion, a website for a newspaper chain in southern Spain.

Abengoa Bioenergy reported it had 263 employees at its office near the Chesterfield Mall, said Libbey Malberg-Tucker, Chesterfield’s community services and economic development director. She said she has not yet received a layoff notice from Missouri or the company.
