The Empire District Electric Company, a Joplin-based utility serving some 218,000 customers in four states, is “in the early stages of exploring strategic alternatives” and has retained a financial adviser to assist with that process, the company announced in a press release.

Empire said it made the announcement in response to “recent media reports concerning the company.” Reports surfaced late last week that the utility might be up for sale, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

The company said it would not discuss the matter further and that it could not give any assurances that “Empire’s Board of Directors will act on any specific strategic alternative.”

Empire’s stock price spiked 8.3 percent in trading Friday amid reports of a possible sale.
