Drone owners now required to register with the FAA

Anticipating heavy holiday drone sales, the Federal Aviation Administration established a new rule that took effect Monday requiring owners to register their model aircraft.

The FAA is requiring registration for owners of all small-unmanned aircraft weighing between 0.55 pounds and 55 pounds, including the weight of any on-board cameras.

All drone owners must register. Owners of drones flown previously as model aircraft must register by Feb. 19. Drones purchased after Dec. 21 must register before the aircraft’s first flight outdoors.
